A short description of the course

Graduates in Economics will have an appropriate knowledge of economics and an adequate training in the utilization and application of quantitative methods (mathematics and statistics); they will master the fundaments of business economics as well as the institutional framework and the law system that are particularly relevant for economic interactions. Graduates will also learn how to apply scientific methodology and the specific competences for the collection and analysis of data that are needed for economic studies in numerous applied fields. To this end, the course program includes topics from different areas: economics, mathematics, statistics, management, and law. At the end of their training, graduates in Economics will be able to analyse several relevant issues concerning the functioning of modern economic systems, and their production apparatus in particular.        

Training Purposes

Graduates will have to know the main issues of the economic theory and the quantitative (mathematical and statistical) methods that are essential to design and understand the models describing social and economic phenomena. They will, therefore have to know, also adopting a deductive approach of analysis, the main issues concerning the study of the markets, the structure and the organizations of the productive activities, the functioning of the labour market, and the role of the economic policy and public intervention aimed at improving the efficient allocation of the resources. The program of the Degree in Economics leads graduates to know how to apply the acquired knowledge. This ability is shown through an appropriate use of quantitative instruments in the study of the main economic variables (i.e. income, prices, employment, investments); an appropriate analysis of the industrial and service sectors; a critical approach to the interpretation of local, national and international data; the capacity of choosing among the different public and private solutions of market inefficiencies. Training aims at all the education activities delivered make the graduate developing the capacity of judgement, that is, the capacity to critically evaluate causes and effects of the most relevant economic phenomena (unemployment, inflation, financial crises); to suggest different and alternative explanations of these phenomena; to estimate their trend in the medium term; to propose different policy solutions. The course aims at developing the communication and interacting ability of the students, also applying the modern instruments of communication; the latter will be able to apply the knowledge acquired during the courses for the solution of economic, business and juridical questions. Specifically, graduates should be able to explain the nature and the origin of economic problems, showing communication and interactive abilities, which are requirements in the future work relations. Consistently with the topics studied in the course, the student accumulates learning skills concerning both the theory and the ability to do, to communicate and to judge autonomously. Among the teaching instruments adopted, stages and the participation to professional seminars play a significant role in the learning process.

Career Opportunities

Graduates in Economics can be employed in the economic offices of both public and private organizations. In particular, they can work in:

  • The research offices of banks
  • insurance and financial institutions
  • local public institutions
  • national and international research organizations, in firms and groups of firms (consortia)

Most of these professions are included in the classification reported in the Profession Inventory of ISFOL (the Italian institute for the developing of the professional education of workers). The course prepares to the following professions:

  • expert in social science;
  • expert in economic science;
  • experts in administrative, management and financial issues.
