English & Management - University of York

The English and Management Summer Programme is a collaborative project established in 2013 between the Dipartimento di Economia e Impresa (University of Catania) and the Centre for Global Programmes (University of York, U.K.). For three weeks in August our students live and study on campus at the University of York, where they learn to communicate with increased confidence in spoken English, as well as in academic situations, and where they adopt a case-study approach to learning by preparing end-of-course project presentations. The English and Management course gives them the opportunity to work alongside students of economics and business from other countries, including Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China and Brazil. The case studies are linked to some of the trips that the students make during the course, and lessons are run by University of York English-teaching staff and lecturers from the York Management School. In addition, there is a full timetable of social events on and off campus to enhance group bonding and team building between the nationalities, such as “ice-breaker”, karaoke, team treasure hunt, international cookery evening, conversation groups, but also group self-study sessions and conversation hours. Over 70 students have taken part in the programme so far, finding it not only invaluable in terms of their personal growth, but also as an addition to their academic portfolio, when applying either for post-graduate courses in Italy and other countries, or for jobs which require English language skills.
